The Municipality of Famagusta supports the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta Basilios in the Archbishopric elections that will take place on Sunday, December 18, calling on the people of Famagusta to support him.
In a written announcement by the Municipality of Famagusta it is stated that “it has been 48 years since we were violently uprooted from Famagusta and with us also Metropolitan Basilios, who from all the positions he held and holds in the Church always stands by us, close to the people of Famagusta and to all displaced persons. His concern especially for the refugees of his metropolitan region, who are scattered throughout Cyprus, was evident from the first moment he assumed his duties as Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta in 2007.
It is added that "Metropolitan Basilios is a true patriot who loves all of Cyprus, with an open mind, always with an outstretched hand of friendship to all Cypriots regardless of religion and ethnic origin. Constantias – Famagusta Vasileios is a genuine Famagusta, one of the last to graduate from A’ Famagusta High School in 1974, and church leader, who does not fail to visit with every foreigner who visits him, the Cultural Center in Deryneia, to tell him the story of our beloved city, to show him our open wound, to ask for help and support, hoping that the return and reunion will become a reality.
To this end, it is noted that “Metropolitan Vasilios, especially from the position of the Archbishop of Cyprus, can contribute, continuing to defend the justice of all the displaced, because as a refugee himself from the Mandres of Famagusta and the Monastery of the Apostle Barnabas, he experienced and he experiences the same pain as us. Metropolitan Basilios can carry out his new mission successfully and this is ensured by his 60 years of ecclesiastical contribution, his studies and his knowledge.
For these reasons, the announcement adds « as the Municipality of Famagusta, with absolute respect for the other hierarchs who are candidates, we officially support the candidacy of Metropolitan Basilios of Constantia and Famagusta for election to the position of Archbishop of Cyprus. We call on all the people of Famagusta to support Metropolitan Basil, so that the Church of Cyprus has a capable leader.
