=”nr7gm”>On Sunday morning, the Municipality of Limassol proceeded with the demolition of the illegal structure erected in the “Epaminonda” municipal block by the Limassol Passenger Transport Company (EMEL).
After yesterday's publication, in an announcement by the Municipality it was stated that it would take all the necessary actions, the Municipal Authority proceeded to demolish the ground floor building, with an area of about 300 sq.m., which was found to have been erected arbitrarily, without any permit and without comply with any legal procedures.
The plot, which is part of the area where the public market used to operate every Saturday, is municipal property acquired by the Municipality after expropriation and with the aim of creating cultural and social infrastructure. An adjacent plot has also been expropriated by the Republic of Cyprus for the purposes of creating a bus station as part of the implementation of the Limassol Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
In its announcement, the Municipality of Limassol states that, after a public tender, EMEL has been entrusted by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works with the provision of public passenger transport services in Limassol “but this does not in any way change the fact that it is a private company with private shareholders and private interests”.
< p data-block-key="43jtd">“Although the Municipality of Limassol strongly supports the development of public transport and the strengthening of the use of buses in our city, it could not tolerate the arbitrary construction and use of property of the citizens of the city, intended for use for other cultural and social purposes, by a private company”, he adds.
He also notes that, in this context, it was decided that the Municipality should act immediately and to this end it proceeded with work today demolition of the arbitrary and illegal constructions and restoration of the site to its previous state, with the aim that it remains available so that, once the relevant designs are completed, the development of the social and/or cultural infrastructure can be implemented.
“Our Municipality remains committed to serving the interests of all the citizens of Limassol and its actions will be aimed at the common good”, concludes the announcement.
