The new battle of Cyprus begins with 35 opponents

Three of our four representatives are starting their quest for distinction in Europe this week, from the second round of European competitions.

Omonia (Tuesday with Dinamo), Apollon (Thursday with Zilina) and AEL (Thursday with Vlaznia) enter the “dance” (followed by Anorthosis in the third round), aiming to reach the group stage and as many teams as possible If they succeed, the better chances Cyprus will have of winning its new battle.

The big goal was achieved last season and, occupying the 15th place in UEFA for the five years 2016/17 – 2020/21, Cyprus secured a fifth European ticket for the 2022/23 season. Specifically, in the season that begins, in addition to the team that will be crowned champion, in the Champions League will also play the runner-up (both from the 2nd round). The cup winner will play in the Europa League (3rd round) and the third and fourth in the Conference League (2nd round), where he will play the fifth if the cup is won by a team of four.

Of course, the “prize” that Cyprus won is valid for only one season and if we do not manage to stay in the 15th team this year, in 2023/24 we will return to the quadruple representation. The European tickets for that season will be determined by the score of the five years completed this year (2017/18 – 2021/22) and in it, with the points of the 2016/17 season being subtracted with the current season for now (almost ) “Empty” of points, Cyprus is not only in the top 15, but in fact holds, in the beginning, the 14th place.

The table includes the points of Croatia (500) from the two victories of Dinamo Zagreb in the first round and Turkey (800) from the bonus of (direct) entry of Besiktas in the groups of the Champions League.

This, however, does not make us a favorite. The differences from the non-privileged positions are minimal, as yes it will not affect us if the 15th Switzerland (-325) overtakes us, but in a very close distance are also the 16th Croatia (-600), the 17th Turkey (-1,050) , and the 18th Czech Republic (-1,150). Even the 19th Greece is not very far away (-2.050), while based on the difference that separates us, it is not excluded that the 20th Norway (-2.625) and the 21st Denmark (-2.875) will enter the “battle” later.

In addition, the distance we have, especially from Croatia, Turkey, and the Czech Republic, becomes even smaller, if we consider that from this year, on the “table” there are more points to claim, as each team participating in the second round of the Champions League will give at least six matches and each Europa League team (starting from the third round) at least four, while at the same time the groups of the groups increase by 16 (out of 80 96 will participate).

Omonia, Anorthosis, Apollonas and AEL, therefore, will carry Cyprus on their backs this year, with the hope that as many of our teams as possible will be able to enter groups, in order to increase our chances of holding the fifth European ticket. In order to manage to stay in the 15th team, it is considered a given that we will need to put a team in a group, while in fact it is most likely that we will need more than one qualification.

We remind you that the countries get the points earned by their teams divided by the number of their initial representatives in Europe, which is why Cyprus will divide this year by four (next year by five). In the qualifiers, we will get 250 for each win (1,000) and 125 for each draw (500), while in the groups our country will get 500 for each win (2,000) and 250 for each draw (1,000). Admission to the Champions League groups is rewarded with 4,000 points (we will get 1,000 if Omonia enters).
