The Contract for the Construction of the First Phase of the Mental Health Center in Nicosia was signed today in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Giannis Karousou and the Minister of Health, Michalis Hadjipandelas. The Contract was signed on behalf of the Government by the Director of the Public Works Department, Antonis Koutsoulis and, on behalf of the Contractor, Cyfield Construction Limited, by the General Manager, Despina Chrysochou.

The Project will be implemented using the Design, Construction and Maintenance method and the value of the Contract amounts to € 12,013,050 including VAT. The studies and construction works will be completed within 24 months, while the Contractor will have the additional responsibility for the 12-year maintenance of the Project. How much € 6.8 million will be raised from the Recovery Fund for the period 2021-2025 announced by the President of the Republic. The coordination for the implementation of the Project is the Department of Public Works and its monitoring will be done by a team of Officers of the Department of Public Works, the Department of Electromechanical Services and the Audit Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

The project, whose facilities will have a total area of 4500 m², includes, among others:

• Acute Case Chambers 50 beds, with ECT clinic and nursing and medical staff rooms,

• Therapeutic Unit for Addicts 18 beds with rooms for nursing and medical staff, gym, staff training room and multi-purpose areas for occupational therapy,

• Exterior work and landscaping,

• Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical installations, concerning both the main buildings and the outdoor areas,

• Demolition of existing chambers / biological station and relative remediation of premises.

High quality infrastructure

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works pointed out that “today's signature of the Council comes to implement another proclamation of the President of the Republic, confirming that the Government's aim is to ensure that all necessary infrastructure is available. rehabilitation and reintegration of the mentally ill, with absolute respect for their dignity and rights, on the basis of the recommendations of modern psychiatric care “.

He added that in the development of the Project all provisions were taken into account, so that its infrastructure is of high standards, ensuring that the building will be energy class A with low operating costs and high quality living conditions for patients and staff.

For his part, the Minister of Health stated that “mental health and its support infrastructure are a key pillar of the operation of health services in Cyprus. For us, providing quality care for mental health, especially in this difficult period of the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought with it particular challenges in the field, is a priority. “With the implementation of this very important project, we will be in an even better position to respond effectively to the needs of citizens for the treatment of mental illness and addiction.”
