The occupied territories continue to purchase electricity from the free territories, as local production is unable to meet the increased needs.
According to the Press and Information Office, “Dialog” writes that the production of the “electricity authority” (“KIB-TEK”) and the Turkish company AKSA, which are active in occupied, are not sufficient to cover the demand.
“KIB-TEK” buys daily from EAC 10 to 30 megawatts, mainly in the evening hours, paying 15 Turkish pounds (TL) per kWh. This price is considered high, as the production cost for “KIB-TEK” amounts to 9 TL per kilowatt hour and for AKSA to 10 TL. Therefore, the purchase from the free areas is 50% more expensive.
The newspaper reports that this development makes the increase in the price of electricity in the occupied areas inevitable. Although “KIB-TEK” covers damages amounting to 100 million TL at current prices, this amount is not considered sufficient. Estimates speak of increases of 12% to 15%.
KIB-TEK officials attribute the situation to increased demand, which jumped by 45 % in the period June 2023 – June 2024.
