The Open University and SALA signed a memorandum of understanding

With the aim of the two-way transfer of scientific knowledge, expertise and know-how in common areas of cooperation, Cyprus Open University and Limassol Sewerage Council – Amathountas, they recently signed a memorandum of understanding.

According to an announcement, speaking at the institutionalization ceremony of the cooperation, which took place at the offices of SALA, its President and Mayor of Limassol Nikos Nicolaidis, referred to the importance of the partnership of the Local Self-Government and public benefit organizations with the academic institutions of Cyprus.

He noted that the expertise of the academic and research staff of the Open University of Cyprus in the fields of environmental engineering, public health, environmental management and protection, etc., can significantly strengthen the work of SALA.

The extroversion and the need for creative cooperation with other actors of the local society is a strategic goal for the Open University of Cyprus, emphasized the President of the Council Giorgos Papas, with the ultimate goal of providing quality, beneficial and useful university education. Welcoming the signing of the agreement, he expressed his satisfaction with APKY's outreach actions and the provision of know-how to solve society's problems, especially when they concern the management/protection of the environment and the promotion of the circular economy.

The Rector of APKY, Professor Petros Pasiardis, noted his particular satisfaction for the strategic cooperation established with SALA, which will have as its main concern, among other things, the joint participation in claiming external funding for research and educational projects to benefit of local development and the strengthening of the national economy and society. He underlined the timing of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding as this year the University completes 20 years of life and contribution to higher education, education, culture and our society.

For his part, the General Director of SALA Yannis Tsouloftas referred to the substantial benefits that will arise from the cooperation of a technical organization with an academic institution for the promotion of research projects, the preparation of studies and the two-way exchange of scientific and technical data. He noted that the collaboration also aims at the (re)training of SALA staff through their participation in the Distance Study Programs offered by APKY, as well as the opportunities that the community of students and graduates of the University will have for placement at SALA and obtaining professional experience.
