A minute's silence was observed by the Plenary of the Parliament, on the occasion of January 27, which has been established as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust. MP Annita Dimitriou, said that the mass and methodical extermination of millions of Jews by the Nazi regime constituted the sad culmination of a series of crimes against humanity committed in the maelstrom and death hells of the Second World War.

“Already seventy-eight years later, the commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day is not merely symbolic, but imperative, as the old continent and modern democracies constantly face the unprecedented phenomena of a product of racism and anti-Semitism, calling community values into question and the European edifice itself, above all the initiator and guardian of democratic peace”, he said.

At the same time, he added, the failure of the international system to ensure global peace and stability brings humanity back to the ultimate challenge of a new mass and total extermination. the annihilation of man by man therefore poses an abomination for all of us, in the name of defending human life and human dignity,” he said.

At the same time Ms. Dimitriou stated that Cyprus and Israel have developed special ties since ancient times and established diplomatic relations immediately after the independence of the Republic of Cyprus, while in recent years both at the bilateral level and within the framework of the tripartite mechanism Greece-Cyprus-Israel they have strengthened relations and cooperation them in a wide range of sectors.

He noted that of particular geostrategic importance is the tripartite cooperation between Greece-Cyprus-Israel, with a common component of the will to ensure peace, collective security, stability and prosperity.

“For this reason we will continue to work on further deepening and strengthening it  for the benefit of our people and the wider region”, he said.

Ms. Dimitriou welcomed the presence in the plenary hall of the Parliament of Israel's ambassador Oren Anolik and mentioned that again this year the House of Representatives participates in the annual #WeRemember campaign of the World Jewish Congress and UNESCO with various actions, including the illumination of the Parliament building with the #WeRemember campaign logo.
