The President underlined to EU leaders the need for Lebanon's support for immigration management

The need to strengthen the defense and security of the European Union through joint actions and the development of joint programs and capabilities was underlined by the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis, during a working dinner of a group of leaders of the EU member states, hosted last night in Vienna by the President of of the European Council Mr. Charles Michel and the Chancellor of Austria Mr. Karl Nehammer.

At the dinner, which was also attended by the leaders of Denmark, Malta and Slovenia, the main topic of discussion was the drafting of the EU's strategic agenda, which will essentially reflect the Union's priorities for the next five years.

< p>In the context of the debate, the President of the Republic also referred to immigration and shipping, highlighting the decisive role they play in the field of security. In particular regarding immigration, President Christodoulidis focused on the issue of quick and immediate returns, on addressing the generative causes of the phenomenon, as well as on the need for an immediate review of the Syrian regime and the designation of specific areas as safe.

He also noted the need for support for Lebanon, for effective immigration management, and emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus, as a frontline country, expects substantial assistance from the EU, especially in the current conditions in the Middle East.

Regarding shipping, the President of the Republic noted that maritime transport is the backbone of European and global trade and the economy. As he said, around 90% of world trade and 80% of the EU's external trade takes place by sea, while 40% of the world's fleet is controlled by European shipowners.

The maritime transport sector is highly strategic. importance, as it is estimated to contribute around 150 billion euros to the EU's annual GDP. In addition, the sector directly employs more than 685,000 workers at sea and on land and supports more than 2 million workers through indirect employment, as the President of the Republic mentioned.< /p>

Finally, in economic matters, President Christodoulidis underlined the need to strengthen the competitiveness of the EU, through the deepening of the single market, the strengthening of services and the reduction of the administrative burden, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.< /p>
