Green growth is one of the most important goals of modern societies. The benefits of the green transition are not limited to the environment, but extend to both the economic and social spheres. At EU level, the Green Agreement is at the heart of the development strategy. Emphasizing the urgent need for its implementation, the allocation of at least 37% of the total cost of the Plans to reforms and investments contributing to the green transition has been set as a prerequisite for the approval of the Member States' Recovery and Sustainability Plans. & Nbsp; & nbsp; At the same time, the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change held in November 2021 recalled the goal of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and zero clean greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and stressed the need to the measures of the European Green Agreement. Decommissioning from conventional fuels and switching to renewable energy sources, as well as enhancing energy efficiency, are necessary preconditions for achieving climate goals. The energy crisis and inflation that have arisen as a result of the war in Ukraine & nbsp; have highlighted even more the urgent need to further explore and promote alternative energy sources to achieve & nbsp; EU energy security and strategic autonomy and to reduce of the price of energy products. The Cyprus Economy and Competitiveness Council, following a series of contacts with competent bodies and technocrats on the issue of Green Development, makes the following suggestions, which it considers catalytic in terms of long-term goals and commitments of Cyprus in relation to the green transition . Taking steps in the proposed direction will contribute to the long-term development of a green society and economy, in line with the objectives of the long-term strategy “Vision 2035”. Establishment of a State Department for Climate, Environment and Green Sustainability Electricity Grid and Infrastructure Strategy & nbsp; Liberalization of the Energy Market Increase of Production from Renewable Energy Sources and Enhancement of Energy Efficiency Electrical Interconnection with neighboring countries Utilization of the natural gas resources of Cyprus Supportive policies The above suggestions are analyzed in the proposal of the SOAK . |
