The Ministry of Finance is studying how it will be possible – He states that he is not satisfied with the deposits

It leaves open the scenario for the Ministry of Finance to put an additional tax on banks, as there is dissatisfaction with the attitude they have taken so far in relation to deposit and lending rates.

The issue of extraordinary taxation on banks examined at the Commerce Committee, with the Minister of Finance, Mr. Makis Keravnos stating that he is not satisfied with the interest rate policy they have been applying until today.

According to the Minister's statements, a tax of 0.5% is already imposed on deposits, however the Ministry of Finance is examining all aspects and will make final decisions on the matter. This, as he said, will depend on how the banks themselves will handle the whole issue.

Mr. Keravnos indicated that actions must be taken to absorb part of the costs imposed on borrowers. and thus the Ministry of Finance requires the banking institutions to assume the responsibilities in the context of their corporate social responsibility.

The need to take protective measures for consumers from the recent increase was registered and examined in the Department of Commerce, as well as the possibility of a further increase in lending rates regarding non-performing loans (NPLs) and the inability of borrowers to meet increased installments.
