In the oldest city of France, which they founded in 600 BC. Greek sailors from Phocaea in Asia Minor, the Cypriot master of the seas Pavlos Kontidis gave Cyprus its second medal in the history of the Olympic Games.
With second place in the ILCA 7 (Laser) class medal race that finally took place on Wednesday (07/08) after canceling due to apnea on Tuesday (06/08), the 34-year-old sailor deservedly won the silver medal, twelve years after London silver (then August 6, now August 7). The gold was won by the Australian and the bronze by the Peruvian Peschiera (the ranking did not change after the medal race) who made the surprise.
Cyprus became the 70th country to win medal at the “Paris 2024” Olympic Games, out of the 206 participating expeditions.
Pavlos is only the sixth athlete in Laser Olympic history with two Olympic medals, while his Croatian coach Jozo Jakelic wins the 4th consecutive Olympic medal (all silver) after he had silver with Stipanovic in Rio and Tokyo. The Australians win the Lasers for the fourth consecutive event and Wearn is the first athlete to do the back-to-back in the class since 1996 when it entered the Olympic program. Wearn along with the legendary Robert Scheidt are the only two Olympic gold medalists in Laser.
