The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athena Michailidou, presented all the actions the Republic of Cyprus is taking for the full access, without exceptions or discrimination, of the Turkish Cypriotsof our fellow citizens who live in the free areas of Cyprus, the right to education and other rights.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letympiotis said on Thursday that Mrs. Michailidou participated on Tuesday at a session of the Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament, following a relevant invitation.

During her intervention, the Minister highlighted in an emphatically the serious problems caused by the attitude of the occupying regime over time in the daily life of our trapped compatriots, resulting in a dramatic reduction in their number (330 according to the last count, compared to 20,000 in 1974).

In particular, on the issue of the obstacles interfering with the full access of the trapped to the right to education, said the Spokesperson, the Minister, after pointing out that the occupying regime has further “hardened” its attitude in recent months, referred to specific unacceptable actions of , such as the censorship and/or banning of school textbooks, the “rejection” of teachers appointed by the Education Service Committee in our occupied schools, including the schools in Kormakitis, which are ready, after 20 years, to reopen after actions by Government and the ban on the passage of inspectors or other officials of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to the schools of Rizokarpasos, where 43 students are currently studying, if so-called “special permission” has not been secured in advance by the occupying “authorities”.

The MPs-members of the Commission showed particular interest in the reports of the Minister, even asking for more information on the matter and their positive reaction to the Minister's intervention was followed by their intention to have a delegation of the Commission visit our country and seek to go to the occupied Rizokarpasos, to ascertain the situation “personally”, added the Spokesperson.
