The discussion of an amending bill that introduces provisions for the operation of luxury camps, also known as “Glamping”, started on Tuesday by the parliamentary Committee on Trade.
The bill and the relevant regulations & nbsp; modernize the provisions that regulate the creation and operation of tourist accommodation that fall into the category of tourist camps, which with this bill can be classified in the luxury classes, A, B and out of order, as provided for other categories of tourist accommodation. At the same time, new provisions are introduced that will regulate the development of “luxury camps” Glamping “, a new international trend in tourism that is growing rapidly worldwide and is associated with the experience of luxury accommodation in the countryside.

According to the introductory report, these developments are expected to contribute to the enrichment of the tourism product, to the further development of mountainous and rural areas and at the same time to attract new segments of tourist markets.
The submission of the bill was welcomed by all members of the Commission, with its President Kyriakos Hatzigiannis stating that “glamping is in the absolutely necessary and right direction” as it will be part of our tourism product.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Savvas Perdios assured that the vision and purpose of the bill is neither the increase of hotel beds, for which there was concern, nor the big companies. “The first reason we wanted to make the bill is to help the highlands, the countryside and the small families who want to do their own business and not cause problems in the forest,” he said.
The General Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Theofanis Tryfonos, also stated before the committee that the operation of the specific camps does not affect the hotel industry, since they concern developments mainly in mountainous areas. “It comes to complement and strengthen the existing hotel industry and certainly because of the activities, local communities are strengthened and local businesses because someone who will live in the forest will definitely make walking routes,” he added.
The President of PASYXE, Haris Loizidis said that in the context of upgrading and improving our tourism product, such changes are always welcome. & Nbsp; “Offering new services to visitors is something we encourage,” he said.
A representative of the Union of Communities expressed doubts that the criteria apply to large companies, noting that some small businesses or family businesses in different communities could be active in the sector.
DISY MP Onoufrios Kulla welcomed the bill as an important initiative that covers market gaps and addresses the new world and added that there should be safeguards against any abuse.
MP of the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation Stavros Papadouris said that attention should be paid in order to avoid the phenomenon of refreshments on the coast of Limassol which had become uncontrollable.
EDEK MP Elias Myrianthous also welcomed the submission of the bill, saying that the current situation creates a negative impression with the individual camps, citing as an example the “bahalo” that takes place every August in the area of Polis t Chrysochous.
Finally, Michalis Giakoumi of DIPA welcomed the submission of the bill and added that there should be safety valves in order to prevent possible abuses.
