The tourist arrivals in January are seriously ill

Tourist arrivals decreased by 95.5% in January 2021, compared to January 2020, due to restrictive measures to address the coronavirus pandemic, with arrivals from Greece being the main source of tourism.

According to the Statistical Service, tourist arrivals in January 2021 amounted to 3,889, showing a decrease of 95.5% compared to January 2020 when 85,622 arrivals were recorded. Compared to January 2019 (with 81,970 arrivals), a decrease of 95.3% was recorded.

Arrivals from Greece were the main source of tourism for the month of January 2021, as they accounted for 48.4% of total arrivals and arrivals from Germany at 8.8%, while other countries accounted for smaller percentages.

Compared to January 2020, arrivals from Greece decreased by 79.5% and arrivals from Germany 79.7%.

Moreover, according to the Statistical Service, the purpose of travel in January 2021 was for 11.9% of tourists holidays, for 26.3% the visit to friends or relatives and for 61.8% business.

Respectively for January 2020, 57.6% visited Cyprus for holidays, 22.9% for visiting friends or relatives and 19.2% for business reasons.
