The new German Ambassador to Cyprus Anke Schlimm in a meeting she had today with the Speaker of Parliament Annita Dimitriou, reaffirmed her country's support for the efforts to resume talks to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation. a “two-state” solution cannot be accepted.

Ms. Schlimm stated that the German Government is closely following the developments regarding the Cyprus issue and in particular in the enclosed area of Famagusta.

According to a statement, the Speaker of Parliament stated that the relations between Cyprus and Germany, as Member States of the European Union (EU), are based on common principles and values and the commitment of the two countries to them.

Ms. Dimitriou noted the very recent election of Ms. Bärbel Bas to the Presidency of the Federal Parliament of Germany, expressing the desire to further strengthen the cooperation and exchanges between the Parliaments of Cyprus and Germany at all levels.

Referring to the escalating Turkish provocations, especially in the enclosed area of Famagusta, the Speaker of the Parliament stressed that the Turkish side's demand for a “two-state” solution, in violation of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and the agreed United Nations Framework of the Cyprus problem, cannot be accepted and has been rejected by the EU and the wider international community.

Ms. Dimitriou stressed the need for the resumption of talks as soon as possible to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, which will reunite the country in conditions of peace, security and prosperity for the entire Cypriot people.

The Speaker of the Parliament also pointed out the serious challenge that Cyprus is called upon to manage as the EU Member State with the largest number of asylum seekers compared to its population, mainly due to the channeling of illegal immigrants from Turkey, through the occupied Cypriot Government areas.

The meeting also expressed the common will to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest, such as climate change, gender equality and education.
