The Engineering Department of the University of Nicosia, in collaboration with Shell PLC, offered the experiential workshop NXplorers Pro to students. The full-day workshop, held on November 17, 2023, provided a unique training experience to participants, equipping them with the skills they need for a successful career.
Through a hands-on approach based on teamwork, engineering students took a journey from complex problems to sustainable solutions, which included: defining and investigating real-world problems, uncovering root causes and leverage points, envisioning multiple future scenarios and shaping the best, as well as effectively transforming ideas into solutions with real value.
During the workshop, students worked in teams to develop action strategies for positive impact, demonstrating their ability to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world problems. The seminar fostered a collaborative learning environment, encouraging participants to share ideas, perspectives and experiences.
The NXplorers Pro workshop envisions itself as a catalyst for change, making participants active agents in shaping a better future. By providing a platform for learning, collaboration and action, the lab cultivates the next generation of engineers, equipped with the necessary skills and mindset to tackle today's challenges and create a more sustainable and just world.
The seminar instructor, Mr. Tariq Hussain, is currently the head of Shell's NXplorers program. Developed and led its rollout in 20 countries as an initiative with high social impact. He also developed Shell NXplorers Pro, an innovative excellence learning experience for Shell staff and partners to help them develop their systems development and scenario thinking skills.
Mr. Hussain worked for 20 years as a Chemical Engineer in the oil and gas industry, in various fields. He is a distinguished expert in dynamic process simulation and was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. His vision gave this initiative global momentum, empowering young minds with the tools they need to learn how to manage complexity, ask the right questions, develop a collaborative mindset to tackle truly complex problems and propose practical solutions with sustainable features.
After the event, Mr. Hussain said: “I want to thank the University of Nicosia for inviting me to conduct the NXplorers workshop. It was so much fun and really great to see the collaborative spirit and passion from the engineering students as they explored complex, interesting challenges and hatched innovative ideas.”
The students who participated in the workshop were thrilled. Ms. Sofya Fedkina, a 3rd year student of the Electrical Engineering program said: “The workshop was an incredible experience that changed my perspective on solving problems and developing design solutions. It provided me with the tools and mindset to tackle complex issues. I feel that I now have the potential to do positive work in the world.”
Finally, the Chair of the Department of Engineering at the University of Nicosia, Dr. Stelios Neofytou, commented that: “The NXplorers workshop is a shining example of our department's commitment to fostering innovation and empowering the next generation of engineers . The workshop's hands-on, team-based approach provided participants with the skills and mindset to tackle complex challenges and create sustainable solutions. We are grateful to the workshop instructor and his team, and I am confident that their efforts will have a significant impact on our students and beyond.”
