The people's verdict must be respected, Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol said tonight. In statements in the Diocese of Limassol – and with the counting being at an advanced stage, not yet completed – Limassol Athanasios thanked God and the people for the result in the archdiocesan elections, as well as those who worked and "toiled" for that.

"We send our love and our wishes to the whole world of Cyprus and we hope that the almighty God will help the rest to develop in a spirit of love and unity and reverence and fear of God," he said.

Asked whether the opinion of the people should be taken into account for the election of the new Archbishop, the Metropolitan of Limassol Athanasios underlined that  "The verdict of our people must be respected in order to have the power to participate in electoral procedures. Af' at the moment we asked him to vote, it is natural to accept and respect his opinion”.

When asked whether he will start consultations with other synods, the Metropolitan of Limassol said "we are all brothers in Christ and we are anxious for the good of our Church. Certainly, in the spirit of cooperation there will be some consultations, nothing more. I left everything in God's hands, I had no particular worries.

Asked to comment that the result was recorded by the polls, Limassol Athanasios responded by saying that "the polls come and go.
