The world's first floating transport of liquefied hydrogen is a fact

The world's first liquefied hydrogen carrier departed from Japan on Friday to pick up its first cargo in Australia, with a return to Japan expected in late February, Kawasaki Heavy Industries said.

The $ 500 million (approximately € 320 million) pilot project, led by Japanese Kawasaki and backed by the two countries, was originally scheduled to ship its first shipment of hydrogen extracted from lignite to Australia last spring.

However, it was postponed for the second half of Kawasaki's financial year, which runs from October to March, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It depends on the weather, but the Suiso Frontier is due to arrive in Australia in mid-January and is expected to return to Japan around the end of February,” said a spokesman. A one-way trip takes about 16 days.

Kawasaki Heavy aims to build on its success as a major producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers with hydrogen, a key element that can help industries get rid of coal and help the global energy transition.

In March of this year, the Japanese-Australian company began producing hydrogen from lignite in its pilot project, which aims to show that liquefied hydrogen can be produced and exported safely to Japan.
