There is a National Strategy for energy with the ultimate goal of reducing the cost of electricity, argued the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Giorgos Papanastasiou, commenting on yesterday's reports by parliamentarians during the debate in the Plenary Assembly of the EAC budget.

Answering questions from journalists on the sidelines of a meeting of the Consumer Protection Service, the Minister asserted “I can tell you honestly that there is a national strategy for energy, which aims and has as its final destination the reduction of electricity costs in the residential property and in the business and according to expansion in the Cypriot economy”.

He added that the Cypriot economy, be it services or products, is currently not competitive due to the high cost of electricity.

“We as a Ministry are open to any discussion to present this National Strategy, we have already presented it several times by holding meetings with various stakeholders. I believe that the Parliament should also ask us to make this presentation of the National Strategy in order to stop these discussions around the pursuit of a national energy strategy”, he said.

He argued that there is this strategy, there is the goal and the ways, however at the moment, as he said, it is the tools that are missing to start giving solutions and reach the destination. He explained that one tool is the natural gas gasification terminal at Vasilikos which should be finished.

Asked if grid, storage and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) issues are on track, Mr. Papanastasiou said that they start with the production of electricity and then the transmission and distribution of the electricity. He added that through this system the networks should be developed, become intelligent and in this direction they are working and moving forward with the next steps. At the same time, he said, they are also making moves so that these networks can also store electricity that comes from sources that are beyond conventional power generation.

He added that the purpose of this national energy strategy concerns a mixture of electricity which comes from conventional electricity generation and from green electricity generation.

“We want to increase green power generation and reduce conventional, because conventional is also the most expensive,” he said.

He added that to achieve this, it is necessary to store the energy from RES in batteries . At the same time, he said, an attempt is being made to make households and businesses autonomous through projects such as photovoltaics. He referred to the “Photovoltaics for All” scheme, which he said has just started and has applications exceeding 4,500. He added that the purpose is for the buildings to be autonomous and not need the current that flows through the network.
