From floods to tornadoes – What the Service says

The Civil Defense is once again making recommendations to minimize the risks and negative consequences of weather conditions, due to the announcement issued by the Department of Meteorology, about heavy rains and storms that are expected to affect the island from time to time.

It calls on citizens to make sure that the wells outside their home or workplace are not blocked, that the gutters on the property are working properly and if they have a basement in a vulnerable area at risk of flooding, they are calling on them to proceed with the digging of a special water accumulation pit with an automatic water pump and remove valuable objects or expensive equipment from the basement.

He calls them, if they live in a plot with a yard, to leave free soil for the earth to absorb water and to secure objects that may be carried away from the water and to be moved (e.g. tanks, water heaters, etc.).

Also repair any openings in fence walls, prepare sandbags that will prevent water from entering the property and limit their movements and work and stay in underground spaces.

During a flood the public is invited to leave underground spaces and move to a safe high place, not to cross a flooded road and to stop and change direction.

Also you are asked to leave the car if it has stopped, as it may be swept away or flooded, to stay away from power lines and not to approach areas where landslides have occurred.

Following the flood, citizens are advised to stay away from areas that have flooded or are at risk of flooding for the next few hours as the flooding may have altered the features of familiar areas, there are risks from broken pavements and dangerously sloping areas, and waters may to be contaminated, if they have dragged with them various kinds of objects or even animals.

The public is asked not to obstruct rescue crews and not to use the phone without a good reason.

Citizens are asked to remember that the dangers of flooding do not subside immediately after the waters recede and to make sure of the authorities that their area is safe and they can return for restoration work.

They are also advised to turn off the power and water supply switches and wear closed shoes and appropriate clothing to avoid any injuries.

For tornadoes, he urges the public to remove from the yard of the house objects that can be moved by the tornado and secure those that are not secured, close doors and windows, but leave the interior glass shutters open, for a quick equalization of the internal and external atmospheric pressure.

Also move away from objects that can be moved and from glass that may break.

While outdoors, citizens are urged to follow the path of the tornado and to move away as quickly as possible from the points it will pass, staying away from objects that can move and hit them.

If citizens cannot move away from the path of the tornado in time, they are asked to lie down face down in a hollow, protecting the head with the hands, so that they are not in danger of being struck by objects that can be moved or trees that are likely to be uprooted.
