Additional measures to address the rising inflationary pressures brought to the knees by households and intensified by the war in Ukraine are expected to be presented at a meeting convened by the President of the Republic for next Friday at the Presidential Palace.
As officially announced, on the morning of Friday, May 20, President Anastasiadis will chair a meeting at the Presidential Palace with the Ministers of Finance, Labor, Energy and the Deputy Minister of Welfare to study ways to address the inflationary trends observed due to the war in Ukraine. .
The meeting is expected to confirm, among other things, the government's intention to renew the existing measures against accuracy, such as the reduction of VAT on electricity from 19% to 9% for household users, but also the reduction of excise duties. in fuel. Both reductions end, based on the decisions so far, in June, however their extension is considered certain. At the same time, new relief measures are expected to be put on the table due to the increasing & nbsp; recent requests in this direction, both from organized groups and from political forces.

Just last Saturday, AKEL exerted further pressure on the government for measures, publishing a letter it sent to professional groups regarding the initiatives it is promoting in Parliament to address, among other things, rising inflation. It is noted that based on the latest available statistics, inflation in April rose to 8.8% from 7.13% in March. Speaking last week on the issue, the Minister of Finance did not rule out that inflation in the immediate future may reach double digits, which is already observed in other EU countries, but assured that the government, within its capabilities, will continue to provide support. to mitigate the effects of continuing inflationary pressures in the midst of the Ukrainian crisis. At the same time, he acknowledged that “unfortunately we can not kill inflation”, which he said is a pan-European phenomenon due to several reasons. As mentioned, however, next Friday, the government will try not to kill him, but at least to control him, of course within its budgetary possibilities.
