How and why the passport of the Republic of Cyprus was renewed for the Turkish Cypriot lawyer Akan Kurciat, while he was on the wanted list, is the subject of an ongoing investigation by an officer of TAE Headquarters

An investigation is underway by an officer of the TAE Headquarters in order to clarify what went wrong and the Turkish Cypriot lawyer Akan Kursiat secured a Cypriot passport Republic while two arrest warrants were pending against him, one from the Police and one from Europol.

Commenting on yesterday's front page of “P”, the press representative of the Police Headquarters, Christos Andreou, stated that after his arrest in Italy, an officer of the TAE Headquarters was appointed to investigate whether the Turkish Cypriot lawyer left for Italy either from Larnaca airport or of Paphos. “Initially there was information that he left Larnaca airport, which after the investigation turned out not to be true. As part of the ongoing investigation, how he secured any documents is also being investigated,” said Mr. Andreou.

Akan Kursiat applied for and obtained a Republic of Cyprus identity card and passport in 2004, shortly after the roadblocks were opened. In 2005, an arrest warrant was issued against him for cases of usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories. In 2007, a European arrest warrant was issued for the same offence. Ten years later his passport and identity card had expired and while he was wanted he submitted a request to the competent services of the Republic for renewal. Despite the investigation they claim was carried out, it was not established that the person in question was on the wanted list and his passport was duly renewed and he was free to move around until his arrest in Italy.

The Turkish Cypriot lawyer, who is under arrest and is being held in Rome, faces, among other charges, the offenses of conspiracy, obtaining money by false representation, cover-up offenses, as well as illegal possession and use of land. Following his extradition appeal to Cyprus, Akan Kurciat remains in custody in Rome until at least February 6, when the court in Italy will hear his appeal. If the court rejects his objection and decides on his extradition, police investigators will have to go to Italy and transfer him to Cyprus within ten days.

According to information from “P”, the Turkish Cypriot lawyer for his movements during all these years that he is wanted, he used either the passport of the Republic of Cyprus or the “passport” of the pseudo-state. That is, depending on the destination he was traveling to, he used the travel documents that suited him.

Finally, it is recalled that the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, in his statements to “P” confirmed that Akan Kyoursiat's passport was renewed, while he was wanted and that in 2014 the Cyprus Intelligence Service, as the competent authority, carried out a check on his data and did not object to the process of issuing a new passport.
