On Thursday, February 15, the members of PASYDY, PEO and SEK, who work in the histopathology laboratory at Nicosia General Hospital, are going on a 24-hour strike.

According to a joint announcement by the three guilds, it is unthinkable that in a laboratory where tests are carried out for the diagnosis of cancer, no measures are taken by the authorities to prevent it.

More specifically, it is stated that the technical services of OKYpY as well as the Labor Inspection Department have prepared independent studies where the direct and indirect risk faced by the Laboratory's workers is established.

Specifically, it is pointed out in the announcement, the ventilation of the laboratory is not sufficient since the exhausts and ventilators are not working satisfactorily. This results in workers being at chemical risk because laboratory processes require the use of volatile and toxic substances.

Due to the unsatisfactory functioning of the ventilation, gases and fumes are released into the environment every day with unpleasant direct consequences for the workers such as burning of the eyes, dry eyes, coughing, dizziness and bitter taste. Chronic and cumulative exposure to chemicals can cause serious health problems for employees, it added.

The trade unions report that with their joint letters to the Central Administration of OKYPY they repeatedly requested immediate measures to solve the problem but unfortunately no measures were taken.< /p>

“That is why the members of the Departments of Hospital Laboratory Operators of PASYDY, PEO and SEK who work in the Histopathology Laboratory at the Nicosia General Hospital, in a General Assembly held on On February 8, they unanimously decided to declare a 24-hour strike on Thursday, February 15, 2024, since they continue to work in a dangerous and unsafe environment,” the announcement concludes.
