The case of the former Minister of Health George Pamporidis is gaining more and more ground to be AKEL's candidate in the 2023 presidential elections. The decision taken by the AKEL Central Committee last Saturday seems to be laying the carpet for G. Pamporidis. Averof Neophytou and Nikos Christodoulidis were excluded by name and this is of particular importance for the subsequent developments.
Particularly for the latter there is no reference to his capacity as former Minister of the Government Anastasiadis and in general the generalization of the exclusion in the capacity was avoided. This does not leave out George Pamporidis as a possible candidate for the presidential elections. Instead, they open the door for him.
As we are informed, despite the fact that the general report for the exclusion of all current and former alarms was proposed, it did not pass because it would essentially exclude from the context the case of George Pamporidis as former Minister of Anastasiadis and former Alarm.

According to our information, during the discussion in the AKEL Central Committee, there were strong positions against a possible support for Pamporidis candidacy, a fact that the party leadership is called to take seriously.
At the same time, our information states that, despite the fact that no reference is made to the announcement of the Central Committee that has been issued, a proposal has been submitted, as excluded from the dialogue of cooperation with opposition parties for candidates party leaders . This means that AKEL removes from the discussion the name of the president of DIKO Nikola Papadopoulos as a possible joint candidate of the two parties. An evolution that creates new data in the dialogue that is expected to start in the next period.
It is noted that after the end of the contacts, a specific proposal will go to the party base groups in the context of the dialogue as provided by the party process. The party's goal, as determined after yesterday's session, is to have a candidate before Easter.
The general secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, stated in his statements yesterday that “the party's statement that Cyprus needs a progressive change was reaffirmed unanimously” and that it should “get rid of the alarm government”.
