The government on Monday, with … every formality, handed over to the Audit Office five files concerning the naturalization of an equal number of executives of the company MAKRONISOS MARINA LTD, which builds and will manage the Ayia Napa marina, as confirmed by the Attorney General that the specific cases do not fall under the terms of reference of the Investigative Committee investigating the 6,744 exceptional naturalizations.
Therefore, the much-praised – and convenient for her – opinion that the Attorney General had previously given against the granting of naturalization files to the Audit Office could not be implemented, while the investigative work continues. Specifically, the investigation covers cases that were approved until August 17, 2020, while the five naturalizations that will be investigated by the Audit Office were approved on August 21, 2020.
Given the known speed with which the Audit Office moved in previous naturalization checks, it should be taken for granted that within a few weeks and definitely before the May 30 parliamentary elections, political life will be disrupted again by the new findings.
Considering that as early as Friday it became known that in the context of a special report for the Ministry of Tourism, the Audit Office identified possible irregularities or illegalities – without even having the files – in the total of eight naturalizations made through the law firm named after its President Democracy for the benefit of this company, it is reasonable to expect that the more thorough investigation into the contents of the five files will finalize the incompatibilities with the legislation and the decisions of the Council of Ministers.
