The name of DIKO president Nikola Papadopoulos as a candidate for the 2023 presidential elections is officially included in the debate on the opposition parties. The conclusion from yesterday's congress of the party is that the base of DIKO demands that the negotiations with the other parties should have as a starting point that the name of Nikolas Papadopoulos will be on the table. According to our information, in their positions, the delegates of the Democratic Party were universally in favor of the candidacy of their president and set as a primary goal the pursuit of cooperation more broadly with the opposition parties. From the point of view of the party leadership, what was pointed out is that contacts with the political forces will begin and the conclusions from these processes will be presented to the Central Committee for the final decisions.
Sources from the environment of the president of DIKO noted that the position for candidacy of Nikola Papadopoulos is not a red line, thus allowing dialogue with AKEL and all opposition parties, except ELAM. However, in the context of the dialogue that will take place, from the side of DIKO, the only name that enters the table is that of Nikolas Papadopoulos. Therefore, the burden for a counter-proposal is transferred to the other parties and always on the condition that any alternative choice must be justified for its eligibility and qualitative characteristics, in contrast to the name of the president of DIKO.

The statements of the delegates showed, as reported by the information, a universal rejection of a scenario of support for George Pamporidis. Particularly strong were the positions in the scenario in support of the independent candidacy of Nikos Christodoulidis. However, in the case of the former Foreign Minister, there were also voices in favor, as an alternative option in the event of the collapse of the cooperation with AKEL.
Within days, a cycle of contacts between the president of DIKO and the opposition parties is expected to begin. As we are informed, the program includes a meeting with the Secretary General of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou, but also with the President of EDEK Marino Sizopoulos.
