The funeral of the former Member of Parliament and jurist Andreas Angelidis was held
In an atmosphere of heavy mourning, on Friday afternoon the funeral of former Member of Parliament and lawyer, Andreas Angelidis, who died Thursday at the age of 77. The exodus service, presided over by the Archbishop of Cyprus George, was held at the Holy Church of God Sophia, in Strovolos. The burial of the deceased took place in the cemetery of Saints Constantine and Helen, in Nicosia.
In his funeral speech, the President of the Pancypriot Bar Association(PDS), Michalis Vorkas, praised the integrity of the character of the deceased, characterizing him as a “model legal professional, politician and colleague”. He also pointed out that Andreas Angelidis was an excellent expert in administrative and constitutional law, speaking of his unprecedented contribution to the redemption of the homeland.
The deceased, continued Mr. Vorkas, fought battles in international courtsfor the rule of law. “The Cypriot state and society are grateful to you. We will continue with a banner your legacy for the prevalence of international law”, he concluded.
At her funeral, the former Administrative Commissioner, Iliana Nikolaou, referred to the enormous and invaluable contribution of Andreas Angelidis to the prevalence of administrative law in Cyprus, as well as the publications he produced for this purpose.
As Mrs. Nikolaou said, the deceased did not hide his interest for the public, adding that he was an active citizen who served the fair resolution of the Cyprus issue and highlighted difficult issues. Speaking of a creative and fighting man and a loving family man, Mrs. Nikolaou noted that Andreas Angelidis leaves a void that cannot be filled.
For his part, the deceased's brother, Nikos Angelidis, said that Andreas Angelidis' life was “full of action”, pointing out that his brother was “always a fighter, a model of an honest lawyer and politician”. He also said that Andreas Angelidis leaves behind “good sailors”. rights of the country and the citizen”, adding that he taught her what honesty and dignity means.
“I will remember you with love and pride for your pure soul. I am sure that now you are swimming in the waters of Kyrenia“, she concluded.
The son of the deceased, Simos Angelidis, said that his father was a virtuous man, full of love and faith in God. “You could not tolerate injustice, you fought it”, he added. Andreas Angelidis, he continued, was an authority and top in legal science, but at the same time measured and grounded.
As Simos Angelidis said, his father truly fought for the future of the homeland and led in informing citizens about the Anan Plan. “No physical hardship has bent your spirit. I was and will be proud of you,” he concluded.
The funeral of the deceased was attended by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, the Speaker of the Parliament, Annita Dimitriou, party leaders, as well as current and former Members of Parliament.
