The large increases observed these days in meat prices are due to the reduced supply of meat, the President of the Cyprus Consumers' Association, Marios Drousiotis, told KYPE.

In a statement by the Price Observatory of the Protection Service of the Consumer on Thursday, it was reported that this year the prices of meats are increased and range from 16% for pork to 36% for turkey, compared to last year.

Mr. Drousiotis said that increases in meats generally range around 20-25%. Speaking to KYPE, he said that the increase occurred in the last one and a half months and noted that the main reason, if not the only one, is that there is a reduced supply of meat.

As he explained, livestock farmers, due to the accuracy of fodder, they had nothing to feed the animals and too many were forced to reduce the number of their animals. “The decrease in the number of animals also led to a decrease in the supply of meat. When there is a reduced supply of meat, there is an opportunity for them to raise prices as well,” he said, noting that prices were already high due to the accuracy of feed.

He noted that this also applies to imported meats, as the prices of meats imported from Greece are about the same as local ones and there is no noticeable difference, as in other years.

In addition, he said that there are variations in prices. from hypermarket to hypermarket, however these are not large if calculated on all products. He noted that in the special offers brochures of various supermarkets, only 5% of the items are in common and therefore cannot be easily compared.

Asked to give his message to consumers in view of shopping for the holiday table, Mr. Drousiotis said that each consumer, depending on the narrowness of his family income, will reduce the items that he thinks are not so necessary. “Everyone has a different yardstick for what to do and need will force them to take action to cope. I can say “restrain yourself, cut non-essential needs”, but they want to, they don't want to, they will do it because he has no money”, he concluded.
