More specifically, the royal historian and author of “Battle of Brothers”, Robert Lacey, revealed to People that his mother wanted a more “solid” name for her eldest son and that was William, who eventually prevailed. The name is a tribute to William the Conqueror who was crowned the first Norman king of England on Christmas Day 1066.
On the other hand, the prince did not so much want his son's name to be inspired by William the Conqueror, but by another historical figure. According to Robert Lacey, Charles wanted to name his son Arthur after King Arthur.
