Thousands of street teachers in France oppose government strategy for Covid-19 in schools

Tens of thousands of French educators, outraged by the government's crackdown on Covid-19, left their posts today and took to the streets to demand better protection for students and staff from infection.

“Stop the indifference” and “we are tired of the tests” were some of the slogans on teachers' banners throughout France, urging the government to provide them with FFP2 protection masks and to stop changing the rules. so often.

Teachers, parents and school principals are trying to cope with changes in Covid regulations in schools. The new test rules, announced before the end of the Christmas holidays, but have since been amended twice, are fueling anger.

“We have reached such a level of indignation, fatigue and anger that we had no choice but to stage a strike to send a strong message to the government,” said Elizabeth Allen-Moreno, head of the union.

Many protesters shouted in favor of the resignation of Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanche. A government source says he is unlikely to lose his job in such a short time before the April presidential election.

Later today, French Prime Minister Jean-Castex will meet with teachers' representatives, according to his office, as a sign that the government wants to try and calm their anger.

The government has so far insisted on its policy of keeping classes open and asking all students who come in contact with a Covid-infected person to be tested three times.

“I know it's hard, but a strike does not solve problems. “No one is on strike against a virus,” Blanche told BFM TV earlier this week.

According to the teachers' unions, 75% of primary school teachers and 62% of high school teachers went on strike, with the Ministry of Education saying that less than half of those mentioned by the unions went on strike.
