For only three penalty points, Pavlos Kontidis was left out of medals at the Tokyo Olympics, winning fourth place in the final standings.

Pavlos Kontidis finished 6th in the medal race and took fourth place in the final standings with 88 penalty points. The Cypriot Olympian had secured participation in the medal race being 4th in the overall standings after ten races.

The gold medal in the Men's Laser was won by the Australian Matt Warren, the silver by the Croatian Tonci Stipanovic and the bronze by the Norwegian Herman Tomasgard.

In his first statements after the race, Pavlos Kontidis described the fourth place as a “great result”, however, as he said, it hurts to reach the source and not drink water.

In addition, in a statement, the Cyprus Sports Organization warmly congratulates Pavlos Kontidis, stating that he made an effort in the last race of medals, finishing in the honorable 4th place.

“A huge success for the athlete himself, the Cypriot sailing and the Cypriot sports, something that makes us feel special pride”, he adds.

He also notes that with his overall presence in Tokyo, Pavlos Kontidis proved that he is in the elite of sailors in the world, “promoting in the best way our sport and our small homeland”.

Finally, it is mentioned that the COM and the State have always supported the competitive efforts of Pavlos Kontidis and they will continue to do so in the future. The Organization also congratulates the Limassol Nautical Club, the Cyprus Sailing Federation, as well as the training team and the family of Kontidis.
