The tree planting organized by the OPAP Limassol Marathon in collaboration with the event's platinum sponsor SMT Shipping took place with great success.
In addition to the 50 saplings granted by the Department of Forestry, they were planted on Wednesday, January 18, on Polemidion Hill in front of the Church of Panagia Glykiotissa in Limassol. The tree planting was carried out by the employees of SMT Shipping and the OPAP Limassol Marathon, in the presence of the Commissioner for the Environment, Clelia Vassiliou.
The OPAP Limassol Marathon has set itself the goal of being the most environmentally responsible sports event in Cyprus. For this purpose, it has designed and is implementing an integrated environmental management plan for its activities before, during and after the Marathon according to Andreas Spyrou, Director of Operations Development of the organization.
“The OPAP Limassol Marathon needs the support of businesses for the organization of environmental actions aimed at strengthening environmental awareness and protecting the environment. We sincerely thank SMT Shipping for putting its little stone in this great effort of the organization which promotes volunteering among other things” said Mr. Spyrou.
“Tree planting initiatives reinforce the goal of environmental sustainability. Especially in terms of dealing with the climate crisis, the benefits of tree planting are many and important. Nature does not need to be saved by us as it has its own rules. We should help to rebalance it” said Mrs. Vassiliou, expressing her thanks to the organizers of the OPAP Limassol Marathon and the employees of SMT Shipping for the initiative.
