According to the New York Post, the footage, which is being seen publicly for the first time, was captured by the police officer's uniform camera who first climbed, with the help of a colleague, onto the roof where Crooks was perched and came face to face with his barrel his weapon. In the video, we see him trying to grab onto the roof, see the gunman and, within moments, fall back to the ground. The policeman then starts running around the building to inform his colleagues and ask people to move away.
Seconds after this scene, Crooks would open fire on the campaign rally and then fall dead himself from police fire.
The clip initially has no sound, however from halfway down the sound returns and you can hear the chaos going on.
“He wears glasses, he has long hair,” the officer can be heard saying, describing Crooks' backpack and the AR-15 rifle he was carrying. Someone can be heard calling for an ambulance on the radio.
Within a short time, the policemen surround the building where the perpetrator was, approach it and help each other to climb onto the roof.
The policeman who had first seen the perpetrator asks to go up to the roof again and Crooks is shown in the video lying dead where he had set up his death cartridge.
As it later became known, this particular officer had sprained his ankle during his first attempt to check the roof, when . saw the gunman aiming at him, after falling from a height of 2.5 meters. According to the local police statement, it was not possible at that time to shoot the attacker, since he was using both his hands to pull his body up onto the roof.
Later in the video, the policeman is seen exasperated at the difficulties of communication between law enforcement officials on the wireless: “Before you car@@@s came up here, I was climbing up there like an idiot by myself, man. Then he turned around, I fell down and started shouting “he's on the roof”. Aren't we on the same frequency?”
