Two million Australians again in lockdown due to a case

Nearly 2 million Australians have re-entered the lockdown due to a coronavirus today, following the discovery of a case in Perth, the capital of the state of Western Australia. It is the only new case and no new infections have been found since.

Authorities imposed a lockdown in Perth after a security guard at a quarantine hotel tested positive for the coronavirus.

The state government announced that 66 people are considered close contacts of the security guard, although so far none of those who have been tested have tested positive for coronavirus.

“A total of 13 close contacts have been found to be negative and 11 of these high-risk contacts have been transferred to a quarantine hotel for precautionary reasons,” said Mark McGowan, Prime Minister of Western Australia.

The diagnostic tests in the close contacts of the guard are expected to be completed today, he added.

Australia has largely managed to reduce the covid-19 epidemic, reducing the number of cases to almost 29,000 and the death toll to 909, imposing immediate and drastic measures, such as those adopted in Perth, and strict border controls.

The covid-19 vaccination campaign is expected to begin this month, which will cost, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, at least $ 6.3 billion.

Australia had already pledged $ 4.4 billion to get enough installments for its 26 million people, but Morrison said his government had allocated an additional $ 1.9 billion.

“The strategy is supported by an initial allocation of approximately $ 1.9 billion in new vaccine support. “This is in addition to the $ 4.4 billion available for vaccine purchases,” Morrison said in a speech in Canberra.

Classifying the vaccination program as his “first priority,” Morrison said the economy must now begin to move away from government spending.

Australia has committed more than $ 250 billion to stimulus measures that have already begun to decline.

But Morrison said there was a limit to government support that the government could afford.

“We do not have a white check budget,” Morrison said.
