The receipt of two more newly built dry bulk carriers under the Cypriot flag was announced by Safe Bulkers, Inc., listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with Mr. Poly V. Chatzioannou as CEO.

As part of its fleet renewal and environmental upgrade program, the Company took delivery on January 11, 2024 of the newly built ships MV AMMOXOSTOS and MV KERYNIA, two 82,000 dwt dry bulk carriers built at the Japanese shipyards of Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. The naming of the ship MV Ammoxostos was carried out by the Deputy Minister of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms. Marina Hatzimanoli, while MV Kerynia's Stalos Hatzioannou.

These are two highly energy efficient shipsbuilt with a design that meets the requirements of the IMO regulations regarding reduced carbon dioxide emission by 30% compared to 2008 (EEDI – Phase 3) and also comply with the latest regulation for reduced emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx -Tier III).

Earlier, the Company had received seven more newly built trucks high energy efficiency ships (EEDI – Phase 3, NOx-Tier III). These are MV Vassos, MV Climate Respect, MV Climate Ethics, MV Climate Justice, MV Pedhoulas Trader, MV Morphou, as well as MV Rizokarpaso. The Company currently has a shipbuilding program underway for the construction of seven more vessels of high environmental standards (EEDI – Phase 3, NOx-Tier III), including two Kamsarmax dual-fuel vessels (conventional and methanol), with a delivery schedule by the first quarter of 2027.

The naming of a total of four (4) sister ships, MV Ammoxostos, MV Kerynia, MV Rizokarpaso and MV Morphou, with names corresponding to occupied cities of Cyprus constitutes a move with strong symbolism in view of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and the continued illegal occupation of part of the Republic of Cyprus.

It should be noted that all new constructions will carry the Cypriot flag. The inclusion of these sixteen (16) new state-of-the-art ships in the Cypriot registry contributes dynamically both to its qualitative and quantitative enhancement as well as to the further upgrading of the competitiveness of the Cypriot flag with “green” low-pollution ships.
