As part of the Government's broader policy for the rehabilitation and subsequent care of the Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Areas (AWAS), so that they return to their original environmental status, the Council of Ministers today approved two proposals from the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development. order and suspension of real estate in the Old Shareholder and the District of Nicosia in general, with the aim of facilitating the restoration of the affected land.

The termination of the operation and restoration of the Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Areas (HADA) in the Province of Nicosia, in order to restore them to their original environmental condition, is a project that Cyprus is obliged to carry out, in accordance with its commitments and instructions. EU and in particular Article 16 of Directive 1999/31 / EC. The restoration is expected to achieve the goal of limiting methane production from landfills, including uncontrolled and semi-uncontrolled landfills. This project does not include HADA Kotsiatis, for which an Expropriation Decree has already been published.

With the restoration and subsequent care of HADA, the possibility of reusing these spaces is ensured. The expropriation, foreclosure and suspension of real estate is necessary for the restoration of the affected land in order to fulfill the above European obligations and to ensure public health and protection of the environment.

Today's approvals of the Council of Ministers concern the suspension of pieces to the Old Shareholder, for the restoration of the Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Area to the Old Shareholder as well as the publication of Expropriation Notification and Enforcement Order for the restoration and subsequent care of the Deposits.

As for the latter, work is expected to begin in June 2022 and be completed in 18 months. The cost estimate of the project amounts to approximately 7,200,000 million euros. It is noted that the cost of expropriation of real estate has increased, as more land was required in some HADA for the restoration of the affected land.
