Two years after the revelations about the 7 serial murders of women that shocked Cyprus and no police officer was prosecuted

Just like today, two years ago, the plot begins to unfold with the case of the serial killer Nikos Metaxas, who has confessed to the seven murders of five women and two children.

The uproar caused by the handling of the case led to the resignation of the Minister of Justice Ionas Nikolaou and the compulsion to resign of the then Chief of Police Zacharias Chrysostom from the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis.

The perpetrator who used the nickname “Orestes” on social media to fish for his victims, was sentenced in an express trial by the Criminal Court to seven life sentences.

No police officers were prosecuted

The then Attorney General, Costas Clerides, had given instructions for the criminal prosecution of fifteen police officers who handled allegations of the disappearances of seven women and children, on charges of failure to perform their official duties.

However, about two weeks ago, information that came to light said that following a decision taken by the Legal Service, without being notified, none of these police officers will be prosecuted. In the meantime, the Attorney General has changed – today it is George Savvidis.

For its part, the Legal Service maintains its silence on the issue, at a time when information indicates that only the possibility of disciplinary action against the 15 police officers is being studied.

His victims

The tangle of horror of the 35-year-old's crimes began to unfold, when the body of 38-year-old Marie Rose was accidentally found in the well of the Mitseros mine. Initially, the suspicions fell on her ex-husband who was arrested as a suspect and then released. The investigation led to 35-year-old Metaxas and a fellow officer, who apparently had absolutely nothing to do with the case. At first, Metaxas did not admit his involvement and then admitted that he killed Marie Rose. Sierra's 6-year-old daughter had claimed to have died from vomiting. He later confessed to the murder of 28-year-old Arian Palana Lozano in the Mitseros mine shaft. Nikos Metaxas, in his voluntary testimony, also confessed to the murders of -Kahta Anou, 30 years old from Nepal, and pointed to a well in the Orunda shooting range, where her body was found. He also pointed to the spot in Red Lake where he had dumped the bodies of 36-year-old Livia Bunea and his 8-year-old daughter Elena, as well as 29-year-old Marikar Valdez, into travel suitcases.

The chronicle of the “Orestes” case

On Friday, April 19, 35-year-old Doctor Nikos Metaxas was arrested and sentenced to probation, after it was found that he was talking to Marie Rose and other women through a profile called “Orestes” that he had created on social media. On the same day, he admitted the murder of Marie Rose and her 6-year-old daughter.

On April 20, investigators found the body of a second adult woman, Arian Palanas, also from the Philippines, in the same mine. On April 21, “Orestes” confesses to the murder of this woman.

On April 25, the body of 30-year-old Asmita Khadka Bista from Nepal was found in a pit at the Orunda shooting range. On the same day, “Orestes” confesses to the murder of Asmita and three more murders: 36-year-old Livia from Romania, 8-year-old daughter Elena Natalia and 29-year-old Maricar. Their bodies were found in suitcases which “Orestes” threw into the Red Lake of Mitsero.

The first suitcase is located on April 28, the second on May 5, and the third on June 4. The last body, that of 6-year-old Sierra, is located on June 12 in Lake Memi in Xyliatos.
