The UN Secretary General is "deeply concerned" after the Ugandan president approved an "anti-homosexuality law" considered one of the most repressive in the world, his spokesman said today.

"We are particularly concerned about the enactment of the anti-homosexuality law in Uganda. The secretary general is clear and calls on member states to respect the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said Stéphane Dujarric.

“He once again calls on all countries to decriminalize consensual relationships between individuals of same sex and transgender people. To be clear, no one should be criminalized, imprisoned, for the one he loves”, he added.

Regarding the consequences of this law on UN missions, "our team in the country continues the dialogue with the government to see what the impact will be," he noted.

"UNAIDS expressed the its concern about the impact on the fight against the transmission of HIV-AIDS, but obviously, each (UN) agency will make the decisions it will have to make within its mandate to see whether its activities can continue or not&quot ?, the spokesman said.

President Yoweri Museveni approved this law, considered one of the most repressive in the world despite warnings from his international partners.

Named &quot “Law Against Homosexuality 2023”, the text foresees heavy penalties for persons who have homosexual relations and “promote” homosexuality.

Repeated same-sex relationships are a crime punishable by the death penalty, which however has not been applied for years in Uganda.
