In the microscope of the Ministry of Education, for one more year, the phenomenon of the occupation of secondary schools, specifically high schools and technical schools, the night before the first bell, by the final students, with those in charge drawing up an action plan in order to avoid the phenomena of destruction and vandalism of the units.
The phenomenon of “occupations” by students, a few hours before the start of the new school year, and the tragedies that followed these events in previous years, had caused intense reflection in the Ministry of Education, which had made it a priority to identify the formula for to avoid these phenomena. To this end, as in the previous year, a meeting has been decided with all the agencies involved, on August 26, in order to draw up the action plan, which will be implemented.
“We will have a meeting with all those involved, to come to a common decision on how to deal with this habit of children. Last year, because there was this coordination and we had an agreement with PSEM and the school councils, a lot was avoided”, the Deputy Director of Secondary Education, Irini Rodosthenous, indicated to REPORTER.
Essentially, what the Ministry of Education wishes to avoid is the occurrence of vandalism and destruction of property belonging to the school units, as happened in previous years, with the aim of getting the school year off to a smooth start. Therefore, for one more year, the Ministry of Education, the Police, organized parents, PSEM and other student organizations, will sit at the same dialogue table, in order to reach the practices that will follow, in order to achieve the best possible result.
“We will follow the same tactics that we followed last year, that is to say that there will be some actions and events for the children, but in reasonable contexts, to avoid the deviations that were presented earlier. Last year we had as a result that these incidents were minimal”.
However, the goal of the Ministry of Education is not to apply a veto to the students to take these actions, however, so that the various actions are not diverted and cause undesirable consequences for everyone. What is being conveyed is that they want to let the children express their desire for the start of the new school year and their feelings about the last grade of their school career, since it is the last chapter of their school career.
“We want the children to express themselves, but under certain conditions. Last year, the children were allowed to have some banners, which had some slogans written on them. But we don't want to cause further reactions and that's why we don't want to completely ban the events”.
On the table and the phenomena at the start of the school term year
It is noted that in addition to the “occupations” of the final students, at the beginning of the school year, the data recorded at the beginning of the year and whether there were any phenomena with aberrations and flares are expected to be put on the table for discussion, so that the necessary decisions and to give instructions to the school principals, so that there is no problem on the first day of returning to the desks.
“We will exchange views at the meeting next week, we will see the decisions implemented and what can be done, for further security. Schools are ready and principals will prepare to deal with various incidents. I think that the school year will start smoothly”, concluded Mrs. Rhodosthenus.
