Unemployment in Cyprus stable at 7.4% in January

It is noted that the unemployment rate in Cyprus had increased in November to 7.3%, compared to 6.9% in October and compared to 6.0% in January 2022.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Cyprus remained stable at 7.4% (6.7% in the euro area, 6.1% in the EU) in January compared to December 2022, following the increase in December compared to in November from 7.3% (the index had remained stable at 6.7% in the eurozone and 6.1% in the EU compared to November) according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

It is noted that the unemployment rate in Cyprus had increased in November to 7.3%, compared to 6.9% in October and compared to 6.0% in January of 2022.

According to Eurostat estimates, in January 2023 the number of unemployed in the EU stood at 13,227 million people, of which 11,288 million in the euro area. Compared to January 2022, the number of unemployed decreased by 318 thousand in the EU and by 220 thousand in the eurozone.

In absolute numbers in Cyprus, the number of unemployed January was at 36 thousand people, having recorded an increase of 7 thousand people compared to January 2022 (29 thousand).

In terms of youth unemployment, 2,781 million people under the age of 25 were unemployed in the EU in January 2023, of which 2,286 million were in the euro area.

The proportion of young people unemployment stood at 14.4% in January in both the EU and the eurozone, down from 14.5% and 14.3% respectively in the previous month.

In absolute numbers, compared to January 2022, youth unemployment increased by 116 thousand in the EU and by 112 thousand in the eurozone.

For Cyprus there are no updated data on youth unemployment in January 2023. In December the youth unemployment rate stood at 18.7%, which in absolute numbers translated to 8 thousand people.

Looking at unemployment by gender, the unemployment rate among women stood at 6.5% in the EU in January, unchanged from December. The corresponding figure for men stood at 5.7%, down slightly from 5.8% the previous month.

In the eurozone, the unemployment rate among women rose to 7.2% (from 7.1% in December), and decreased to 6.2% (from 6.3%) for men.

In Cyprus, the unemployment rate among women remained stable at 8.7% compared to December, while it fell to 6.1% (from 6.2%) for men.
