Unemployment rate in Cyprus at 6.4% in December

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in the euro area and the EU further decreased in December 2021 to 7.0% and 6.4% respectively, small compared to November, but higher than last year, according to data published by Eurostat , the Statistical Office of the European Union.

The unemployment rate also decreased in Cyprus compared to December last year to 6.4%, however in the case of Cyprus the unemployment rate remained stagnant between November and December 2021.

The unemployment rate in the euro area decreased to 7.0% compared to November 2021 when it was at 7.1%, but also compared to December 2020 when it was at 8.2%.

In the European Union the unemployment rate in December 2021 was at 6.4%, recording a decrease both compared to November 2021 when it was at 6.5% and compared to December 2020 when it was at 7.5 %.

Eurostat estimates that 13.612 million people were unemployed in the EU, of which 11.481 million in the eurozone in December 2021.

Compared to November 2021, the number of unemployed decreased by 210 thousand people in the EU and by 185 thousand in the eurozone.

Compared to December 2020, the number of unemployed decreased by 2.196 million in the EU and by 1.828 million in the euro area.

In Cyprus, the unemployment rate in December 2021 remained stagnant compared to November when it was at 6.4%, having recorded a small decrease compared to October 2021 when it was at 6.6%.

However, the unemployment rate in Cyprus decreased compared to December 2020, when it was at 8.0%.

The number of unemployed in Cyprus remained stagnant at 30 thousand in December compared to November, however it decreased by 6 thousand compared to December last year when the number was at 36 thousand.

In terms of youth unemployment (under 25) in December, 2.748 million young people were unemployed in the EU, of which 2.222 million in the euro area.

The youth unemployment rate in December 2021 stood at 14.9% in both the EU and the eurozone, having fallen from 15.3% in the EU and 15.4% in the eurozone in November 2021.

Compared to November 2021, youth unemployment fell by 81 thousand people in the EU and by 78 thousand people in the eurozone.

Compared to December 2020, youth unemployment fell by 385 thousand people in the EU and by 323 thousand people in the eurozone.

In Cyprus, the youth unemployment rate in December 2021 was at 15.1%, as in November, having fallen compared to December 2020 when it was at 19.9%.

The number of unemployed young people in November and December was at 6 thousand, having decreased by about a thousand people compared to December 2020 when it was at 7 thousand.

In terms of how unemployment affects both sexes, the unemployment rate for women in the EU was 6.6% in December, down from 6.8% in November.

The unemployment rate for men was 6.1%, having also fallen slightly from 6.2% in November.

In the eurozone, the unemployment rate for women fell from 7.5% in November to 7.3% in December 2021, while the unemployment rate for men fell from 6.8% to 6.7% over the same period.

In Cyprus, the unemployment rate among women was 6.8% in December 2021 (a decrease compared to November when it was 6.5% and compared to December 2020 when it was 7.9%) and between of men was at 6.0% (decrease compared to November when it was at 6.3% and compared to December 2020 when it was at 8.2%).
