The contribution of the university units that are increasingly developing in the province of Paphos is valuable. The development opportunities of both entrepreneurship and the local community in general, were among the topics raised during the discussion “Paphos 2040 – Volume III:” The Contribution of Universities to the development of the city “, which was organized on Friday, May 20, 2022 in “Attikon” complex in Paphos, the independent, non-governmental, non-profit organization Oxygono and the Municipality of Paphos.
During his speech, the Mayor of Paphos, Faidonas Faidonos, underlined that the Municipality chose to focus on the development of higher education from the finding that until now it relied only on tourism and land development. Despite the benefits of both sectors, he explained, they are mainly manual professions and so focused on developing a more spiritual sector of that of higher education. It is no coincidence that Paphos was selected by two universities from Israel and Lebanon to settle in Cyprus, since our country is close to the Middle East, as the Mayor argued, among other things. In fact, Mr. Faidonos said that in addition to education, other sectors such as technology can be developed.
George Demosthenous, Rector of Frederick University, explained the benefits of having a higher education institution in an area. Frederick is located at the eastern tip of Nicosia, and if it did not exist, he expressed the view that the area would be one of the most degraded not only in Nicosia but also in Cyprus. He commented, however, that in order to develop a sustainable ecosystem in Cyprus, more than 100,000 students are needed and that is why some procedures will have to change.
For his part, Triantaphyllos Albanis, Rector of the University of Ioannina, noted that the 30,000 students of the University affect 25% of the city's economy and social life. According to calculations made, Ioannina has the highest density of students, 150 per 1000 inhabitants. As the Rector explained, one measure implemented by the University so that good students do not leave is not to charge tuition fees for postgraduate programs.
Asked to comment on the potential for development of the business sector, Dimitrios Dimitriou, President of the Chamber of Ioannina, said that entrepreneurship and education grew hand in hand in the city. “Students offer more than 150 million euros to the city's businesses. “They were the reason for significant growth in infrastructure, real estate, catering,” he noted. At the same time, he explained that other sectors have developed, and cited as an example the fact that there are six amateur theater schools in the city with the participation of students.
Finally, the position made by Georgia Athanassiou, Chairman of the Board of Oxygono, was important, who on behalf of the organization stated that the side benefits from the presence and development of university units create significant added value for the city of Paphos and its residents. . The absence of universities nullifies the ability of each city to talk to the modern reality, which is largely shaped by knowledge production institutions. He also stressed that universities contribute to the fields of innovation and culture while investing in the human factor and can make the city creative. To this end, he explained, there is a need for vision, strategic planning and formulation of specific policies with long-term results, as well as combined action of the government, local authorities, organized groups and the citizens themselves.
