Urge Minister Health for flu vaccine-“Absolutely safe and effective”

Vaccination with the flu vaccine is particularly important for people who fall into high-risk groups, says the Ministry of Health, which urges the public, regardless of age, or if they belong to a high-risk group, to contact the Staff. His doctor so he can get the flu shot for free. He also notes that the flu vaccine is safe and effective and its side effects are relatively rare and mild.  

As the Ministry of Health clarifies in its announcement, high-risk groups concern people  over 65 years of age, people with chronic health problems (asthma or other chronic lung diseases, heart diseases, immunosuppression, transplantation organs, sickle cell disease, diabetes mellitus, morbid obesity, chronic kidney disease and liver disease, neuromuscular or neurological diseases), pregnant women as well as adults and children taking long-term aspirin.

The flu vaccine is also recommended for children over 6 months to 15 years of age, workers in healthcare facilities, caregivers of people with an underlying disease, closed populations (school staff and boarding students, military school police, inmates and staff institutions, recruits and conscripts in the armed forces) as well as professionals such as veterinarians, poultry farmers, pig farmers, butchers and people who come into systematic contact with birds.

In the event that people are uninsured in the NHS, they can contact the Adult Immunization Centers or the Maternity Protection and Child Welfare Centers of the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry of Health reports that in the current period, due to the lower exposure to the influenza virus, due to the containment measures against the Covid-19 pandemic, the public is more vulnerable to influenza and according to recent data, influenza activity continues to increase across the European region, with earlier seasonal activity in relation to the periods before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also, according to the data of the influenza surveillance system at the Unit of Epidemiological Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health, in Cyprus the appearance of the flu usually begins with a small percentage of incidents from the end of Autumn and peaks in the months of January-February, the announcement concludes.
