Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, a former beauty pageant winner and the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was arrested Monday at Washington International Airport on suspicion of plotting to assassinate .
Coronel Aispuro, a dual Mexican and American citizen, is expected to appear in federal court today.
Her husband, co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel, long considered the world's most powerful drug lord, was sentenced in July 2019 to life in prison in the United States for drug trafficking. He is serving his sentence in a high security prison in Colorado. The 30-year-old El Chapo is accused of being involved in a network that flooded the US market with substances ranging from cocaine to marijuana, to heroin and methamphetamines.
According to a lawsuit filed against her, she also allegedly participated in the extremely complicated operation to escape her husband in July 2015 from a Mexican prison, worthy of a Hollywood movie. In order to escape, “El Tsapo” dug a gallery of one and a half kilometers to his cell, equipped with rails and other means.
The revelation of the details of the escape was a painful blow to the Mexican authorities. The couple had twin girls, born in California (southern USA) in 2012. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had undertaken to investigate the young woman, who attended almost all the hearings of her husband's trial in 2019.
US justice allows her little contact with her husband – she has been barred from visiting him in jail, and she has also been barred from talking on the phone.
