Visit of President Anastasiadis to Estonia after the contacts made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs

The President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis, is expected to pay a visit to Estonia in the near future, during which a revised Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of e-government and information and communication technologies is expected to be signed. The preparation of Anastasiadis' upcoming visit to Tallinn was among the issues raised during the current contacts of Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis, during his working visit to the Estonian capital. This is the first visit of a Cypriot Foreign Minister to Estonia since 2008.

The timing of Christodoulidis' visit is considered, according to diplomatic sources, to be particularly important, given the critical period that the Cyprus issue is going through and the developments and milestones in the near future, given that Estonia, apart from being an EU member state, is and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2020-2021, and in fact chairs the work of the Council this month.

In this context, as informed by KYPE, the discussion that Mr. Christodoulidis had with his Estonian counterpart, Eva-Maria Liimets, was important for the need for the UN Security Council to be vigilant to send clear messages to Ankara on the basis of a solution to the Cyprus problem, but also in relation to the issue of the enclosed area of Varosia, following the relevant Presidential Declaration of the SA of October 2020 and in accordance with Resolutions 550 and 789 of the House, as well as EU-Turkey relations, in particular with a view to discussing this issue, which is expected to take place at the forthcoming European Council on 24-25 June.

The presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Estonia, diplomatic sources told KYPE, also serves the preparation of President Anastasiadis' visit there in the near future, during which a revised Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of e-government is expected to be signed. ) and information and communication technologies (ICT), with the aim of providing support in Cyprus for the digitization of the public administration, in order to provide electronic services to citizens and businesses. Estonia is considered a world leader in e-government.

During his working visit to Tallinn, Mr. Christodoulidis had a private meeting and consultation with the Estonian Foreign Minister, during which bilateral relations were reviewed and specific ways to further strengthen them were discussed, including in the fields of trade. tourism, research and innovation, and digital transformation. They also exchanged views on the latest developments in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, the Cyprus issue, on EU-Turkey relations, as well as regional and international issues of common interest.

The Foreign Minister also had separate meetings with the Speaker of the Parliament Jüri Ratas and with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the parliament Marko Mihkelson. Information was given on the Cyprus issue and Euro-Turkish relations, and international and regional issues of common interest were discussed, while the need for further strengthening of relations at the parliamentary level was pointed out.

Mr. Christodoulidis also visited the Estonian Innovation and e-Government Information Center, where he was briefed on digital reform issues, in which Estonia is a world leader.

During his visit to Tallinn, Christodoulidis completed his cycle of visits to the Baltic capitals, following visits to Riga, Latvia and Vilnius, Lithuania last month. This round of visits aimed, inter alia, at promoting bilateral relations, strengthening Nicosia 's foothold in the Baltic States and expanding support for Nicosia' s positions on issues of national interest within the EU and beyond.

It is noted that Estonia is the closest EU Member State to Cyprus in terms of population (Estonian population 1.3 million) and Cyprus and Estonia have many common features despite the geographical distance that separates them.
