Visit of the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, to the “Hope For Children” CRC Policy Center

The Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr. Margaritis Schina, was welcomed today at the shelter for unaccompanied children of Hope For ChildrenCRC Policy Center (HFC) the Founder and General Director of the Organization Mr. Joseph Borghese. The visit was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs. Marilena Evangelou, the Head of the European Delegation in Cyprus, Ms. Myrto Zambarta and the Officer A' of the Social Welfare Services Ms. Chara Tapanidou.

During the visit, the Executive Director of HFC, Ms. Andria Neocleous with members of the Organization's Management presented to Mr. Schinas and his colleagues, the multi-dimensional work carried out by the “Hope For Children'' CRC Policy Center as a pioneering organization in matters concerning children's rights and the largest Non-Governmental Organization of child protection in Cyprus.

During the tour of the shelter for unaccompanied children, the EU Vice-President was informed about the operation of the structure and the services provided since the foundation day of the shelter in 2014, in cooperation with the Social Welfare Services that have the custody of the children being hosted. Specifically, they were informed about the rehabilitation, integration and sustainable solution services offered to the children, as well as about the actions concerning the coverage of their individual needs.

Special reference was made to the staffing of the roofs by specialized staff who is called upon every day to face the challenges that exist in the field of support and integration of unaccompanied children. Proposals were also discussed that can significantly contribute to solving the existing difficulties, to meeting the needs that arise, as well as the recommendations of the Organization regarding the improvement of the management and integration of unaccompanied children, in the context of the crisis that Cyprus is experiencing today.

Finally, on behalf of the “Hope or Children” CRC Policy Center, Mr. Borghese especially thanked Mr. Schina for his interest in the Organization's work and said: “We are particularly honored by this visit, given the connection and presence of the Organization at the European level and the efforts to promote European values, and we express our commitment to cooperation with the aim of improving the infrastructure and services concerning children in Cyprus.”
