“Don't read content from the Post today” was the message of the Washington Post workers' union, as part of a 24-hour strike it called.

The union on Thursday called on readers of the prestigious American newspaper to boycott its production in solidarity with the striking staff.

<p>About 750 newspaper employees walked off the job Thursday in a “historic 24-hour strike,” according to Axios.</p>
<p>The Washington Post Guild has announced that hundreds of workers are striking for a day, decrying management's unwillingness to “negotiate in good faith,” leaving staff fearing further layoffs.</p>
<p>Strike mobilization is taking country after 18 months of negotiations on a new agreement, which would mainly concern wage claims or the issue of telework.</p>
<p>“To proceed with this historic measure is not a decision we have taken lightly,” the Washington Post Guild affirmed in a letter sent to readers Tuesday announcing the strike.</p>

According to the union, management at the newspaper, owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, “repeatedly and illegally broke off negotiations on important issues, including wages, employee mental health support and voluntary severance.”

The Washington Post Guild represents about 1,000 newspaper workers, either in editorial or commercial roles, according to its website.

“We respect the rights of our colleagues to participate in this planned one-day strike. We will ensure that our readers and customers are affected as little as possible,” a Post spokesperson said in a statement.

In October, a few months after suspending publication of the Sunday magazine, WaPo announced layoffs with plans to lay off 240 of its 2,500 employees. .

Traditional American media have been struggling for years, amid a sharp decline in readership in favor of social media platforms.
