Cyprus ranks first among the 27 Member States in terms of increasing corruption in the country. According to the new global corruption barometer of Transparency International, 65% of Cypriots who participated in the survey believe that corruption in our country has increased in the past 12 months. They are followed by Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania. The Transparency International survey involved more than 40,000 people in all 27 EU countries. The results reveal that almost a third of people believe that corruption is worsening in their country. Another 44% believe that it is not getting better.

Whether it is perceptions of government corruption and impunity for crimes, or the use of personal connections in accessing public services, the results challenge the image of the EU as a place of integrity. They are also calling for immediate and coordinated action against a growing problem.

Business and politics are intertwined

People in the EU are increasingly looking at the comfortable relationship between business and government. When it is not clear what links policymakers have with the business community, there is a risk that policies and regulations will be made in favor of narrow private interests rather than the common good. The survey found that less than a third of people (30 percent) believe that their government takes their views into account when making decisions. About half believe that bribes or connections are commonly used by businesses to secure lucrative government contracts, and that large companies often evade paying their taxes.

Citizens are divided over which institutions have the biggest corruption problems. In half of the EU countries, prime ministers and members of parliament are considered the most corrupt. In the other half, they are business executives and bankers. However, trust in the police, local governments and courts is high throughout the region. More than 60% of EU residents said they trusted these institutions.
