What is the Greek island with the most churches?

Must read

& nbsp;

It is known that in all the Cycladic islands it is typical that there are numerous churches and chapels but on this island it is said that there is one church for each day of the year, ie 365 in total.

According to tradition, it has 365 churches, ie one for each day of the year. The reason that this island of the Cyclades is full of churches is that on the island of Ios the traditions play an active role to this day. Its inhabitants take care of their maintenance and care for the surrounding area.

Many of the churches of the Cyclades have been characterized as preserved as historical monuments of the post-Byzantine period. Their architecture is more or less the same in all. They have a dome at the top and are rectangular in shape. Inside they are simply made with a few chairs and pictures, while outside they are whitewashed.

The reason for Ios, a popular destination mainly for young people who many describe as “rival awe of Mykonos”. Tradition therefore wants to have so many churches – maybe more – standing out from the other islands of the Cyclades.

The most famous is Panagia Gremiotissa, which dominates the highest point of Chora. Many even say, jokingly, that there are so many (365) nightclubs that one can choose in the summer.

Ios got its name in antiquity from the word Ia, the flowers that grew abundantly on the island. However, according to another view, the island owes its name to the Phoenician word Ios, which means a pile of stones.
