Which candidates with a financial degree are preparing for Parliament

The major parties have announced in the last few days the ballots they have drawn up in view of the parliamentary elections of May 30, 2021. Although the party lists include candidates who are probably unknown to the general public, as a result it is not possible to predict the areas in which they will focus. We tried to isolate the candidates of the big parties who, taking into account their studies or professional activities, we estimate that they will give on behalf of their parties, if they secure an election, the battles in the parliamentary Committee on Finance or in other committees, to pass or reject or drastically amend the sensitive bills that will affect the local economy during the five years 2021-26, with of course the most important being the budgets of the state, the semi-governmental organizations and the independent authorities and committees.

As the devaluation of institutions, politics and politicians is on the rise, it is very likely that the abstention in this electoral process will be great, perhaps greater than ever. It is also possible that there will be serious differences in the electoral power – and ranking – of the parties, but also that many new faces will enter Parliament.

Thanks to DISY and Thanks to AKEL

Two strong “papers” with financial training on the ballots of DISY and AKEL are namesake! They both claim a seat in Parliament and if they succeed it is considered almost certain that they will staff their party groups in the Finance Committee. They are Haris Georgiadis and Haris Polykarpou, two people with strong political backgrounds and economic studies. Mr. Georgiadis studied international relations and economics at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. In 2013, he was appointed by President Nikos Anastasiadis as Minister of Finance, at the height of a deep economic crisis. During his term, which ended with his resignation in December 2019, the Cypriot economy achieved a strong recovery, with a drastic reduction in unemployment, consolidation of the banking system, surplus budgets and successive upgrades, which restored Cyprus deep in investment. During his tenure, however, the Cooperative was “sold” to the Hellenic Bank, a development that was widely discussed and resulted in a finding of a Research Committee, aggravating for Mr. Georgiadis.

Haris Polykarpou is a graduate of the Department of Economic Policy of the Athens University of Economics and Business and the Department of International and European Studies of Panteion University, with postgraduate studies in economics and finance, at Queen Mary, University of London. He is also a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science and Governance at the University of Nicosia, with a research interest in the Economic and Monetary Union of the European Union. He is the head of the Office of Economic and Social Studies of the Central Committee of AKEL.

The Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Budget is the pre-eminent committee that examines bills and issues of an economic nature, such as the annual state budget, the annual budgets of all legal entities under public law and the bills and regulations submitted by the Ministry of Finance. In the context of parliamentary scrutiny, this committee studies issues concerning the general state of the economy and the position of Cyprus in the international economic environment, the working conditions of permanent and temporary civil servants, legal persons under public law, the operation of commercial banks, the Central Bank of Cyprus and the operation of the financial system in general.
